Finnmark Northern Lights Tours

Alta sits at the head of the Altafjord, right where the land climbs onto Finnmarksvidda, a broad plateau with few lights, where inland air is often drier than on the coast. That makes the town a strong base for the aurora. Five guided trips leave Alta after dark. Two go by road in a minibus or a big bus; on the other three you ride a snowmobile or a quad, or sit in a horse sleigh. Below, each one stands next to its price and its catch.

  • Aurora season: September to late MarchThe nights turn dark from late August; from mid-May to late July the midnight sun keeps the sky bright
  • Go on your first nightBooking an early date leaves spare evenings for a second try if cloud sits over Alta

In a hurry? Our top pick is Æventyr's snowmobile night: ~$284 a person to steer your own machine to Beskardes, a quiet spot where the land rises onto Finnmarksvidda. The warm suit and helmet are lent, and coffee waits at the top.

Alta aurora tours at a glance

  • Three and a half to six hoursThe sleigh is the shortest night and the photo bus the longest. Start times show when you choose a date
  • Five ways to get out thereA snowmobile you drive, a minibus for 13, a bus for up to 45, a sleigh behind a fjord horse, or a quad by the sea
  • One area or the open roadThe ride tours keep to one area each; the two buses can drive inland or along the fjord to find a clear patch
  • Lights possible, never promisedA clear dark sky over Alta often shows at least a faint band, but no listing guarantees one or pays back a cloudy night

If you only have a minute

Which Alta aurora trip should you book?

If a friend asked how to see the northern lights in Finnmark, this is what we would say before their flight north.

For most visitors, the northern lights trip to book from Alta is Æventyr's snowmobile night on Finnmarksvidda, from ~$284. You ride two to a machine behind the guide, about two hours in a four-hour evening, up to a quiet spot on the plateau's edge. All the cold-weather kit is lent.

Prefer a driver who follows the forecast? Alta Adventure's minibus for 13 at ~$257 is the most reviewed aurora tour in town. On a budget, Karlsøy's photo bus costs ~$129 with a campfire and free portraits. Bringing someone who hates the cold? Flatmoen's horse sleigh ends with a three-course dinner by the fire.

No tour can promise the lights. Read what each night out costs and why inland skies often clear, see how the evening runs, then go through what the listings say quietly before you pay.

Our pick

The night we would book: Æventyr's ride to the plateau

It is not the cheapest seat in Alta, and it cannot chase a gap in the cloud. It is the one trip that takes you up onto Finnmarksvidda itself, at the controls, with a story to tell even if the sky stays shut.

Riders in thermal suits cheering beside a row of parked snowmobiles on the snowy plateau under a bright night sky Our pick

Northern Lights Night Adventure by Snowmobile, Æventyr

★★★★★ 4.7 from 70+ reviews on GetYourGuide · 4.9 from 45+ on Viator · free cancellation up to 24 hours before

Æventyr leads this ride out of Alta along the old postal road. The route climbs to Beskardes, a mountain area on the edge of Finnmarksvidda that one reviewer puts at about 535 m above sea level. Up there the town's lights drop away behind you.

Each machine carries a pair: one of you steers while the other rides pillion, and halfway you change places. The whole group follows the guide in a line, because Norwegian law keeps snowmobiles to set tracks. Out of four hours, roughly two are spent on the machine; the rest goes on suiting up and the briefing, plus a stop for coffee and snacks.

How the night runs, step by step

The listing gives the outline below. The start time appears when you pick a date, and the guide sets the pace on the track.

Out of Alta

  • Pickup in Alta, or meet at Markedsgata 6
  • Thermal suits and shoes handed out with gloves and helmets, then a safety briefing
  • The convoy sets off behind the guide on the old postal road

On the plateau's edge

  • A stop at Beskardes for coffee or tea and snacks, eyes on the northern sky
  • Driver and passenger swap seats for the ride back down
  • Drop-off in Alta about four hours after the start

What the price covers

Every bit of cold-weather kit you need for the ride comes with the seat. What you cannot buy is a sky without cloud.

Included
  • A guide leading the convoy
  • Thermal suit and shoes, plus gloves and a helmet
  • Coffee and tea with snacks
  • Pickup and drop-off in Alta
Not included
  • A refund if the aurora stays away
  • A drive elsewhere when Beskardes is clouded in
  • A seat for children under 12
  • A guarantee of a clear sky

Between us, before you go

Whoever drives must show a valid car licence before the ride, so check that one of you has it with you. The listing also rules out pregnant travelers and anyone over 70 or over 130 kg (287 lbs). People with back problems or limited mobility are not taken either.

The ride needs snow, and the wind on a moving machine bites. The guide for first-time snowmobile drivers walks through the evening from briefing to drop-off.

Why we chose it over a minibus

A minibus can drive an hour to escape a bank of cloud; a snowmobile goes where the track goes. We still put this one first, because the plateau is the reason to come to Alta. Inland air is often drier than at the coast, and on a clear night you stand in open snow with almost no artificial light. The five ride types compared sets out the trade-off.

Who we would not send on it

Families with children under 12, who will be happier on Flatmoen's sleigh or Karlsøy's bus. Travelers who want a guide to chase the clearest sky wherever it is, who belong with Alta Adventure. And anyone who would rather keep their hands off the handlebars, since half the ride is spent driving.

Book it if

You want the night itself to be an adventure, whether or not the lights show. You hold a car licence or travel with someone who does. You like the idea of a hot drink on a silent plateau, with the sky wide open above you. It suits couples and pairs of friends, first-timers on a snowmobile included.

The night itself

How a northern lights night from Alta works

The five trips split on one question. Do you want the ride to be the evening, in one fixed area, or a driver who goes wherever the sky looks clearest?

Style · the ride is the night

A ride through one area

Æventyr, Flatmoen, Finnmark Adventure

3.5–5 hpickup in Alta, a fixed route, a warm stop, back to town

You spend the evening moving. The snowmobile keeps to the plateau's edge, the sleigh to the forest by the Alta River, the quad to the coast at Kviby. Each keeps to its own area, so if cloud sits there you still get the ride but may miss the lights.

Style · chase by road

A minibus or a bus to the gap

Alta Adventure, Karlsøy

4–6 hpickup, a drive to the clearest forecast, stops outside

The guides read the cloud maps and the Kp index and drive inland or along the fjord, sometimes a long way. Most of the night is waiting outside by a fire or a flask, then warming up on board.

Temperatures are rough daytime highs in Alta itself; up on Finnmarksvidda a clear night can fall far lower. The bars show roughly how many hours a night are dark enough for the aurora. We highlight early autumn for mild nights with reflections, and late winter for snow on the tracks. Cloud on the night still decides more than the month. The dark months in detail.

How each trip spends the evening

  • Transfer and briefing
  • Riding or out under the sky
  • Depends on the night

Lengths come from the listings; the split between transfer and time outside is our rough estimate. Karlsøy's night can run up to six hours when the guides have to drive further for a gap. Only Flatmoen gives a start time (8 pm); for the others it shows when you pick a date.

  1. Pick your rideDrive a snowmobile or a quad, sit under blankets on a sleigh, or let a guide do the driving. The five compared.
  2. Choose your monthsSeptember to late March has the dark; snow for the snowmobile usually comes later in the year. Month by month.
  3. Go early in your stayIf cloud covers your first night, there is still time for another attempt. Plan B.
  4. Dress for the plateauWool next to the skin, a hat over the ears and a spare battery inside your jacket. What to wear.

Why aurora hunters drive inland explains how cloud off the sea often thins as it moves inland. It also shows which tours reach the plateau.

Who is coming

Alta Adventure takes no one under 12; Karlsøy and Flatmoen list no minimum age. With children.

Sami country

The plateau is reindeer land, and Alta Adventure's guides tell stories about herding. None of the five visits a herding family. Sami culture around Alta.

Before you go

Ten things about Alta aurora trips that no listing puts up front

None of these sits at the top of a booking page. Each one can decide whether you fly home with a green sky on your phone or a long evening of cloud.

What you should know

  1. The cheapest seat is shared with 44 others. Karlsøy's low price comes from a big bus, while the ride tours charge for the snowmobile or the horse as well as the sky. What the tours cost.
  2. A fixed route cannot dodge cloud. Each of the three ride tours keeps to one area. Only the two buses can drive away from a cloud bank. Ride types compared.
  3. Inland often beats the coast. Cloud rolling in off the sea often thins over the plateau, though not every night. Why Finnmarksvidda clears.
  4. Snow arrives later than the dark. In September and October there is often no snow, which rules out the snowmobile. Flatmoen swaps its sleigh for a carriage. The dark months.
  5. A blank sky is not refunded. If a tour runs and the aurora stays away, no listing offers your money back or a free second night. Tours that drive on through cloud.
  6. The driver needs a licence. On the snowmobile and the quad, whoever steers must hold a car licence, and Æventyr asks to see it before the ride. First time on a snowmobile?.
  7. Clear nights are the cold ones. Under an open sky the inland cold can reach about −20 °C (−4 °F), and the wind on a moving machine bites harder still. What to wear.
  8. No tour on this page visits a herding family. Alta Adventure's guides talk about Sami life and reindeer, but a meeting with herders needs a separate trip. Sami reindeer country.
  9. Cruise guests have a fixed time to be back. Finnmark Adventure gives a Back-to-Ship Guarantee; Karlsøy asks to hear ahead of time about a return deadline. Getting to Alta.
  10. The age limits vary widely. Alta Adventure starts at 12 and the quad at 9. Flatmoen lists no minimum age. Late finishes are hard on small children anyway. With kids.

Fourteen travelers, some who saw the whole sky flare green over the plateau and some who waited under cloud all evening. Here is what they loved and what they would change.

★★★★★Snowmobile to the plateau

I had never driven a snowmobile, and the briefing at the start made it feel far less scary than I expected. My partner drove the climb up the old postal road while I hung on behind, then we swapped at the stop. Up at Beskardes the guide handed round a hot blueberry drink, and a green band slowly lifted out of the north and spread right over our heads. There was not a single light anywhere on the plateau. The suits were so warm I forgot it was minus twenty.

★★★★☆Snowmobile to the plateau

Thick cloud sat over Beskardes the whole evening, so we saw only a grey glow behind it for a few minutes. The ride itself made up for a lot: following the guide in a line across the snow, warm in the thermal suit, coffee at the stop. I knew a snowmobile cannot drive off to find clear sky, and that night it showed.

★★★★★Minibus hunt for 13

The forecast for Alta was poor, so our guide drove inland for well over an hour, checking cloud maps at every stop. Out in the dark he built a fire, handed round hot chocolate and cake, and told us about reindeer herding and what the war did to Finnmark. Around eleven the cloud thinned and a pale curtain opened right above us, rippling green. I had borrowed their warm suit and boots and never felt cold. We were back at the hotel just after midnight.

We chose this one for the price and expected a crowded coach. It was a big bus, with a toilet on board, but two guides kept things moving and one of them explained the solar wind and the Kp scale on the way out. ★★★★★Horse sleigh and dinner

This was my mother's eightieth birthday trip, and she was never going to sit on a snowmobile. The free transfer took us out to the farm, where a calm fjord horse was waiting with the sleigh piled high with blankets. We slid through the birch forest and along the Alta River with the bells jingling, and halfway through a green swirl appeared above the trees. Dinner was three courses by the fire. Our coats smelled of woodsmoke for days, which she did not mind at all.

★★★★★Horse sleigh and dinner

We came in early autumn before any snow, so the horse pulled a carriage instead of a sleigh. Cloud hid the sky all evening. Still, three courses by a crackling fire in the wilderness shelter, wrapped in blankets after the ride, made it a lovely night.

★★★★★Quads by the fjord

We were picked up at the hotel and half an hour later we were in Kviby, pulling on overalls and helmets. After a proper driving lesson we followed the guide along the coast, two to a quad. At a stop by the fjord there was coffee, tea and cookies, and the aurora came up over the water.

Good to know

Why Alta sees the lights, and what the plateau adds

A few minutes of background makes a pale arc over the hills far easier to read, and the moment it brightens far easier to catch.

The aurora is light given off high in the atmosphere when particles streaming from the sun hit the air. The Earth's magnetic field funnels them toward the poles, where they strike oxygen and nitrogen and make them glow. The glow gathers in a ring around the magnetic pole known as the auroral oval. Finnmark lies roughly beneath it.

01A town at 70 degrees north

Alta is the largest town in Finnmark, Norway's northernmost county, at about 70 degrees north. That places it under the oval on many nights, so even a modest display can pass high overhead instead of low on the horizon. The sky still has to be clear. The dark months.

02Fjord on one side, plateau on the other

The town sits at the head of the Altafjord, and behind it the land rises onto Finnmarksvidda. Mostly 300 to 500 m above the sea, the plateau is a sweep of low hills and birch scrub dotted with frozen lakes. Its winters are far colder than the coast's and usually drier, which often means clearer nights. The plateau and its skies.

03Why the colors differ

Green is oxygen glowing roughly 100 to 250 km up, and it is the color you will see most. Red comes from oxygen higher still and shows on strong nights. A pink or violet hem along the bottom of a bright curtain is nitrogen. To the eye a faint aurora looks grey-white, while a camera records it green. Staying warm while you wait.

What most people remember is the quiet build-up: a pale band over the vidda that suddenly sharpens, then ripples and spreads overhead.

04Polar night and midnight sun

Between roughly mid-May and late July the sun never sets, the season of the midnight sun, and no aurora trips run. The dark returns in late August. From roughly late November to mid-January the polar night brings weeks without a sunrise, only a blue twilight around noon. Flying in for the dark season.

05Reading the forecast

Aurora apps lead with the Kp index, one number for how disturbed the Earth's magnetic field is. At Alta's latitude even a low figure can bring a band overhead, so a cloud map usually tells you more on the night. The guides on the two buses watch both. When clouds win.

06A long history of looking up

Around 1899 an aurora observatory went up on Haldde mountain near Alta, often described as the first of its kind. Today the Northern Lights Cathedral in the town center wears a spiral tower clad in titanium. Thousands of years older are the rock carvings of Alta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about the northern lights in Finnmark

Fourteen questions travelers ask before an aurora night from Alta, each with a full answer.

How much does a northern lights tour from Alta cost?

The five trips on this page start at ~$129 per person for Karlsøy's bus, ~$241 for Finnmark Adventure's quads and ~$257 for Alta Adventure's minibus. Æventyr's snowmobile night is ~$284 and Flatmoen's sleigh with dinner ~$332. Some are often shown lower on sale. Every price and extra is in our cost guide.

Which northern lights tour from Alta is the best?

For most visitors we would pick Æventyr's snowmobile ride, because it is the only one that takes you up onto Finnmarksvidda and the night is memorable even under cloud. If clear skies matter more than the ride, Alta Adventure's minibus can drive to wherever the gaps are.

When is the northern lights season in Alta?

From about late August or September to late March or early April, whenever the nights are dark. The midnight sun rules out viewing from roughly mid-May to late July. Clear weather matters more than the month. The season in detail.

How long is an aurora tour from Alta?

Between three and a half hours on Flatmoen's sleigh and up to six on Karlsøy's bus. The snowmobile and the minibus take about four hours, the quad about five. Alta Adventure says you are normally back just after midnight.

Are the northern lights guaranteed in Alta?

No. They depend on solar activity and on cloud, and no listing promises them. Some nights bring a bright display overhead. Others show a faint band, or nothing at all through the cloud. What happens on a cloudy night.

What happens if the tour sees nothing?

If the trip runs and the sky stays shut, none of the five listings offers a refund or a free second night. Alta Adventure runs in any weather and cancels only when weather or road conditions are dangerous, with a full refund in that case.

Do the tours pick you up in Alta?

Yes. Pickup and drop-off in Alta are listed by both Æventyr and Alta Adventure; Æventyr also names a meeting point at Markedsgata 6.
